I've adjusted the areas in the circle for our next count which will take place in early Dec., 2010. Watch for updates for the next count date here. There will be 10 areas within the circle.
We had a great bird count, the day after Christmas! Thanks to all who participated. I have registered the count circle and the data with Audubon and the Payson circle is now a registered Christmas bird count.
See the map below (updated on Dec. 20th with the 6 areas outlined). This map is not completely accurate. For instance, ALL of the shoreline of Utah Lake bordering West Mountain is in the circle. The northern edge of the circle touches the Spanish Fork airport and the southern edge of the circle is about 2 miles south of Santaquin.
The Audubon Christmas bird count is back in Payson! Absent since 1948, this year marks the return of a count here in Payson. The circle map below shows the 6 areas included in the count. We had 16 participants this year!
Audubon's Christmas bird count is the oldest scientific database on bird populations in the world. This year's count will be the 110th!
The Payson count took place on Saturday, the 26th of December. I-15 separates areas 1, 2, and 3 from 4, 5, and 6. Area 1 is bounded on the east by hwy 77 (which runs from the edge of the circle becomes hwy 147 and then 115 to I-15 at Payson) and on the south by hwy 147. Area 2 is the Genola - West mtn. area. Area 3 is the Benjamin area bounded on the north and west by hwy 147 (turns south at flowing well) and on the south by the strawberry canal. Area 6 is bounded by hwy 6 running from Spanish Fork to the northern edge of Payson at the hospital. Area 4 includes Spring Lake, most of Payson and Payson canyon. Area 5 includes Elk Ridge and Woodland Hills.
